How VAT works

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax added to the price of goods and services in many countries. It is charged as a percentage of the net (pre-tax) amount. The formula is VAT = Net Amount × (Rate ÷ 100), and the gross amount is Net + VAT.

For example, on a £100 product at 20% VAT, the VAT is £20 and the gross price is £120. To remove VAT from a gross price, divide by (1 + Rate ÷ 100) — so £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net.
