How to calculate a discount

A percentage discount reduces the original price by a set percentage. The formula is Discount = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100), and the final price is Original Price − Discount. For a fixed-amount discount, simply subtract the discount value from the original price.

For example, a $2,000 item with a 15% discount saves you $300, bringing the final price to $1,700. The effective savings percentage is 15%.

Discount types explained

  • Percentage discount — a % off the original price (e.g. 20% off)
  • Fixed discount — a set amount off (e.g. $50 off)
  • Buy-one-get-one (BOGO) — equivalent to 50% off per unit
  • Seasonal sale — often stacked percentage discounts

What Does a Discount Calculator Do?

A discount calculator shows how much a percentage discount takes off a price, and what the customer actually pays. Useful for shop owners, freelancers, contractors, and sales teams checking promo prices or quotations.

Using a calculator also makes it easy to compare the original price, discount, and final price without doing the math by hand.

What Goes Into a Discount Calculation

  • Original price: The starting price.
  • Discount percentage: How much is being taken off.
  • Discount amount: The actual money removed.
  • Final price: What's left after the discount.
  • Multiple discounts: Be careful — applying two discounts one after another isn't the same as adding the percentages together.
  • Rounding: Match the final amount to your pricing policy.

How to Use It

  1. Open the Discount Calculator.
  2. Enter the original price.
  3. Enter the discount percentage.
  4. Check the discount amount and final price.
  5. Use the result for your offer, quotation, or promo price.
