Typical line items on a plumbing invoice

A well-structured plumbing invoice mirrors how the job was actually delivered: parts first, then the labour that installed them, then any extras. Use the descriptions below as a starting point and adjust to your own pricing.

• Pipes and tubing: PVC, copper, PEX, or CPVC. Bill per metre or per length, and include the diameter.
• Fittings: Elbows, tees, couplings, valves, and adapters. These add up — list them by type and quantity.
• Fixtures: Taps, mixers, shower heads, toilets, sinks. Bill at cost-plus or at a retail price, but be consistent.
• Consumables: Sealant, thread tape, solder, flux. Often bundled into a small “materials” line rather than itemised separately.
• Labour — callout: A flat fee for the first hour or the visit, including travel.
• Labour — hourly: Additional hours beyond the callout, at your standard rate.
• Emergency or out-of-hours: A different rate for nights, weekends, or holidays. Make this explicit so the customer agreed before you attended.

Callout fees and minimum charges

Most plumbers operate on a callout-plus-hourly model: a flat fee covers travel and the first hour (or first half-hour), with extra time billed at an hourly rate. Put the callout fee on its own line at the top of the labour section, with a short note saying what it covers. If the job went longer than expected because of an unforeseen complication — a corroded joint, a buried pipe — note that on the labour line so the customer understands the hours.
