A GST invoice generator lets a registered business produce a tax-compliant bill in the time it takes to type the customer's name. Whether you bill intra-state or inter-state, the structure of a GST invoice is the same: identify the supplier and recipient by GSTIN, list the goods or services with HSN or SAC codes, show the taxable value and the tax split as CGST, SGST and IGST, and total it up clearly. This free GST invoice generator handles the layout for you. Fill in the form, watch the live preview update, and download a clean PDF you can email or print. No signup, no watermark, nothing to install. The tax panel breaks CGST and SGST out separately, and the payment section accepts UPI QR codes so your customer can pay in two taps.

What is a GST invoice?

A GST invoice is a tax invoice issued under the Goods and Services Tax regime. It records a supply of goods or services, shows the tax charged on that supply, and lets the recipient claim input tax credit when eligible. Every registered person with a turnover above the threshold must issue a GST invoice for every taxable supply. The document needs specific fields — supplier GSTIN, recipient GSTIN when registered, invoice number, issue date, place of supply, HSN or SAC code, taxable value, and the tax split. The structure sounds heavy, but the GST invoice generator above formats all of it for you; you just enter the values.

CGST, SGST and IGST explained

GST is split into three components depending on whether the supply is intra-state (within one state) or inter-state (across state borders). For an intra-state supply, the tax is divided equally into Central GST (CGST, collected by the centre) and State GST (SGST, collected by the state). For an inter-state supply, the entire tax is collected as Integrated GST (IGST) by the centre and later apportioned to the consuming state. The total tax amount is identical for the same rate — only the split changes. For example, a 1,000 rupee service billed at 18% within Karnataka carries 90 as CGST and 90 as SGST. The same service billed from Karnataka to Maharashtra carries 180 as IGST.

GSTIN, HSN and SAC codes

  • GSTIN: The 15-character Goods and Services Tax Identification Number issued to every registered taxpayer. Show it for both the supplier and the recipient when the recipient is registered.
  • HSN code: The Harmonised System of Nomenclature code that classifies goods. Businesses with turnover above a threshold must declare HSN codes on invoices for goods.
  • SAC code: The Services Accounting Code, the equivalent of HSN for services. Required on invoices for services above the relevant threshold.
  • Place of supply: The state or union territory where the supply is consumed. This determines whether CGST/SGST or IGST applies.
  • Reverse charge: A flag indicating that the recipient, not the supplier, pays the tax. Most B2B supplies are forward charge; a few, like certain specified services, are reverse charge.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is a GST invoice mandatory for every sale?

A: If you are registered for GST, you must issue a GST tax invoice for every taxable supply above the prescribed threshold. Below the threshold, a simplified bill of supply is allowed. Always confirm against the current rules that apply to your registration type.

Q: What is an HSN code and when do I need it?

A: HSN — Harmonised System of Nomenclature — is the internationally standardised code used to classify goods. Under GST, businesses with turnover above a threshold must declare HSN codes on invoices for goods. The exact digit count varies by turnover slab.

Q: When do I charge IGST instead of CGST and SGST?

A: Charge IGST when the place of supply is in a different state from the supplier's location. Charge CGST and SGST in equal halves when the place of supply is in the same state. The total tax amount is the same for a given rate — only the split differs.

Q: Can I include a UPI QR code on the invoice?

A: Yes. Add your UPI ID in the payment section and the generator renders a QR code on the invoice so the customer can pay from any mobile wallet in two taps.

Q: Is the GST invoice generator free?

A: Yes. You can create and download as many GST invoices as you need without paying, signing up, or installing anything.

Q: Does the generator keep my data on a server?

A: No. The invoice details live in your browser while you work. Download the PDF before you close the tab if you want to keep a copy for your records.
